After restart, launch the Registry Editor ( regedit), preferably as Administrator. Thanks! DISCLAIMER: please don't say stuff like, "lol why r u using ie8?" or "just use another browser" or maybe even "ie8 is dangerous because its not supported by Microsoft, use Firefox!" Because you see that ruins the point of my experiment, I already have other browsers, I just want to see what I can do with ie8.įortunately, a recent MS update (intended for the WS2008SP2 OS) can be applied on Vista SP2 that will implement TLS 1.1/1.2 support on Vista's IE9, too! I have spoken about this important update here.ģ. So feel free to reply if you know of anything. other miscellaneous things you think would be helpful better speed (really slow on some sites compared to Firefox or anything else, if thats even possible to fix) "This page cannot be displayed" Im sure you all have seen that error at some point in time. Even that (a mostly text based site) wont load. If you don't know, there's a lot of sites that depend on tls 1.1 or 1.2, while ie8 in XP doesn't support either. So the point of my new project, is modernizing not ie6, but ie8. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched. So i previously made a post titled, "modernize ie6," After coming to a decision to upgrade to ie8, I realized it was a lot better, although not perfect at all, but usable. If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy. How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378) You will need to redo any IE Updates too. You will need to have your XP CD available. Rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf You can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command: Using System Restore to go back to when every thing worked might fix it. The Repair option for IE in Add and Remove/ Windows Components, might be able to repair your IE Icons. RE: Internet Explorer & Windows XP linney (TechnicalUser) 28 May 03 02:44 ![]() If anyone can give me some suggestions on how I might be able to fix this problem it would be GREATLY appreciated. For some reason, when you do that it fixes the problem, even though going through the Folder Options menu does essentially the same thing. I just changed the open command entry for both files from netscape back to IE. The first is under autohtm and the second is under autohtml. Therefore, in order to change which program is used without messing up the icon you have to go into the registry and change two entries. However, if you change the program it opens with the files go back to the "blank" icon. From their you can go back into the folder options and choose and different icon, the one for internet explorer. If you delete the HTM and HTML file extensions under the folder options and then open both of the file types and tell the computer to use Netscape it will associate with Netscape and give the files icons. Basically my solution thus far has been this. ![]() I did find a round about solution, but it isn't a very good one because if you open up internet explorer it will say that it is not the default web browser, and if you click yes to assign it as default the icons go back to being "blank". I could change the program that they open with, and even change the icon file that they used but neither one of these things fixed the problem. The problem that I am having is my HTM and HTML documents are not displaying an icon. I have Internet Explorer 6 installed on my Windows XP machine and I am having a wierd problem with it.
